Donald Trump Suggests Relocation of World Cup Matches from Massachusetts, Olympics from California

Ex-president Trump has repeatedly declared he would pressure FIFA to remove global soccer tournament matches from a host city based on municipal political climate, with Boston becoming the third such city to face such statements from the White House. Moreover, Trump remarked he would evaluate comparable measures against LA for the 2028 Summer Games due to possible security concerns.

Legal Authority and Possible Pressure

While Trump holds no official jurisdiction to unilaterally remove either competition, he may exert influence the respective governing bodies in charge of each competition to change locations.

Setting for Statements

The comments were made during a media briefing with Javier Milei, who was visiting the presidential residence following the disclosure of a $20 billion rescue package for the Latin American economy. Near the conclusion of the meeting, a reporter inquired Trump about a recent unauthorized gathering in downtown Boston where law enforcement were assaulted and a patrol car was set on fire. The correspondent also wondered if such events could result in the revocation of tournament responsibilities for the larger football competition.

“I would take them away,” the former president said about the soccer games, set to be hosted at the Massachusetts arena. “Their mayor is not good … she is far-left, and they are occupying sections of Boston. It's a significant assertion, don't you think?”

Public Gatherings and Public Safety Concerns

Public disruptions, a online-fueled phenomenon where groups of people congregate on public avenues during nighttime to perform stunts, have been a repeated problem in metropolitan centers since the coronavirus closures. Latest such gatherings have escalated into violence in the region, specifically in the city. Yet, these occurrences are typically not seen as tied to any specific partisan agenda.

“When a mayor is failing, and I feel there are dangerous circumstances, I will call Gianni [Infantino], who is outstanding, and tell him it should be shifted to a different city,” Trump said on Tuesday. “And he would do that. He wouldn’t love to do it, but he would comply. Very easily, he’d do it.”

Organizational Alignment

FIFA President has been open his attempts to be closely connected with the former president ahead of next year’s tournament, planned to be staged in numerous American venues across the America along with a couple in the northern neighbor and three in the southern neighbor. The head has been present at several White House events, arranged for Trump hand over the FIFA club cup after the championship match, and has even rescheduled his own organization’s congress to travel with Trump on a visit to the Middle East earlier in 2025.

Previous Threats

This has not stopped, Trump from warning about the relocation of World Cup events from different locations. On September 25, the Washington city and San Francisco faced comparable comments, with Trump claiming both cities were “governed by radical left lunatics who lack understanding what they are doing,” while challenging the safety level of both areas and claiming that games could be relocated.

Official Rebuttal

Victor Montagliani dismissed Trump’s claims when he commented afterward at a event in London.

“This is the organization's event, under our authority, the organization determines such choices,” the vice-president stated. “Politely to current world leaders, football is more important than political figures and soccer will survive their tenure and their government. It's the strength of this sport, that it is bigger than one leader and bigger than a nation.”

Olympics Threat

Similarly, Trump’s answer to a inquiry about Boston included a parallel statement regarding the upcoming Summer Games.

“In case I perceived the city was failing to be adequately ready, I will relocate it to an alternate venue if I had to,” he remarked. “For the Olympics I’d probably have to get a varying consent, but we will take that action.”

The permission Trump refers to would need to come via the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The leader, Kirsty Coventry, was selected to her post in spring and has so far not appear together with him, but she stated that she desires a discussion with the US figure at eventually.

Other Remarks

Trump also questioned Gavin Newsom’s response of recent blazes, saying that a comparable scenario could cause the relocation of the Games.

“When Newsom is uncooperative, we’re gonna have to be strict,” the former president said.

His message was similarly direct for Boston.

“They better improve their situation,” he remarked. “That’s all my message.”
